Stars in VRML -- Screenshots

We used the VRWEB VRML 1 browser from IICM running on a dual processor Pentium Pro Linux machine. Even on a real bruiser of a machine, navigation was really slow. Stick to the small samples if you'd like to fly around Star Trek style.

From the outside

We start looking at our sample from the outside; colors are generated from the color index information while the radius is a function of luminosity. The sample is spherical because we only included stars within a radius of 25 parsecs from the sun.

On the edge

We zoom towards the sample so now it is taking up most of the screen.

Inside

Now we're inside the sample and are surrounded by starfield. As one can see, the full sample is quite immersive and almost intimidating.
